The perfect day for a horse-lover short on time…

The perfect day for a horse-lover short on time in Melbourne as you travel in air-conditioned comfort to Living Legends.

Located within Woodlands Park, Living Legends is modelled closely on the Home of Rest for Horses in the United Kingdom.  Like the Home of Rest, they aim to support equine research, education and training to benefit horses of all ages and breeds.  Special emphasis, however, is given to the care of older horses.

Living Legends is home to many retired champion race horses from Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong.  You'll get to meet, feed and pat favourites such as Santa Ana Lane, Silent Witness, Apache Cat, Brew, Efficient, Twilight Payment, Redkirk Warrior (GB), Peniaphobia (IRE), Tom Melbourne, Fawkner and Almandin plus recent additions include Gailo Chop, Pakistan Star, Rattan, Behemoth and Johnny Get Angry and many more. Enjoy the opportunity to meet, pat and feed the horses and talk to the stable hands that care for them.  Or pay your respects at the graveside of Legends who are no longer living: Fields of Omagh, Rogan Josh, Zipping, Might and Power, Chief De Beers, Doriemus, Better Loosen Up, Regal Roller.

While there, relax in the beautiful, historic homestead of Woodlands Historic Park with a delicious Devonshire Tea and take some time to explore the on-site museum before travelling back to your cruise ship or hotel.

*Horses at Living Legends are occasionally sent out to 'work' on modelling jobs and media shoots and regularly attend race meetings throughout the State. Therefore we cannot always guarantee the horse you most want to meet will be ‘home’. You can check with us by calling (03) 9372 7636.

What’s not to love with a tour like this? I had no idea Melbourne had a retirement home for racehorses but when I stumbled across it on the internet I was thrilled. It combined some irresistible attractions- champion horses, wine tasting with pizza lunch and as if that wasn’t enough, a boutique beer tasting up at Woodend. .. The horses live on a lovely old property just outside of Melbourne where we were treated to one of the very best Devonshire teas I’ve had before meeting the horses. Stars like Paris Lane, Zipping, Efficent My Lucky Day, Fields of Omagh and the gorgeous Apache Cat as well as Rogan Josh, Might & Power, Silent Witness & other magnificent horses competed for our attention. The unfortunate Admitral Rakti is buried here in a beautiful resting place. The horses seemed delighted with the attention and we all left feeling rather good in having helped the racehorse retirement fund.
Then on to a winery in the Macedons for a tasting and lunch of pizza before heading up to Woodend to indulge in a beer tasting at a boutique brewery. Time for a wander around the historic town and a browse of the shops as well. A great day out.

I did the Horses, Wine & Beer tour last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Anthony is an outstanding guide - even though I didn’t know anyone else on the tour he made me feel extremely welcome and the whole day just became so easy and enjoyable.
We visited Living Legends to meet some equine heroes first hand in their magnificent surrounds (plus Devonshire tea), then off to Gisborne Peak Winery for a tasty pizza lunch with wine tastings.
After a relaxing meal, we made our way to one of Victoria’s best Craft Breweries - Holgate’s at Woodend for tastings of their full range of beers.

A really full day, but a great day. If you love the horses and/or wine and/or craft beer you simply cannot go wrong.
